Dedicated server, VPS and cloud hosting provider Hivelocity Hosting (https://www.hivelocity.net) has recently upgraded their SourceForge mirror server to accommodate the always-expanding download catalog offered at Sourceforge.com. With roughly 1000 users uploading and downloading projects at all times the requirements for a capable system are considerable. A complete overhaul of the server was needed in order to host the entire catalog and create SourceForge’s newest and likely their fastest mirror yet.

The new SourceForge mirror has 18TB of data on a SAS RAID 60 configuration with capacity for 128 drives as the catalog continues to grow. Additional caching capability and capacity is provided via a series of Solid State Drives. The system utilizes LVM and XFS file systems to accommodate the ever-growing SourceForge database. “In order to boost performance through the mirror we utilized the high-performance HTTP server, Nginx,” said Thomas MacPherson, Datacenter Manager and project lead.

The Sourceforge directory reaches more than 46 million consumers world wide. The Hivelocity mirror is one of just four mirror nodes in the United States and primarily serves users on the United States East Coast. “Our mirror is consistently pushing between 400-800 Mbps of data depending on the time of day,” says MacPherson.

Licensed to permit free-of-charge use by everyone, Open Source software (OSS) is truly software produced for the greater good. SourceForge (https://sourceforge.net/) provides free hosting to more than 350,000 OSS development projects. “We at SourceForge are thankful for the continued support of Hivelocity, whose participation in our download mirror network contributes to our ability to deliver more than 3.8 million downloads per day, on behalf of OSS developers and for the benefit of the Open Source community worldwide.” Jacob Moorman, Sr. Director of Site Operations, Geeknet
